The Big East has made a splash with its expansion plan.
Sources have confirmed that TCU will join the league in all sports, and an official announcement is expected this afternoon. The Horned Frogs, currently No. 3 in the BCS standings, give the conference a prominent football member and a ninth team that will greatly help in scheduling as teams can now play eight league games per year.
Big East officials had preferred that TCU join the conference as a football-only member, but the Horned Frogs balked at that idea. So instead the league will grow to 17 in basketball and other sports, which makes it even more unwieldy. But the difference between 16 and 17 is microscopic compared to the legitimacy TCU adds in football.
This is the kind of impact team the Big East needed to add for expansion to have any purpose. And it might not be finished yet. Villanova is still mulling a move up to the FBS level and has been asked to give an answer by the end of the calendar year. That would give the league 10 football members. Central Florida also remains a potential candidate.
I'll have more on this throughout the day. The coaches' teleconference is coming up shortly, and this will be a hot topic. And then there will be the official announcement/press conference this afternoon.
Stay tuned ...
