Home run summer: USF

I continue my series called home run summer, where I present a player or players who have got to knock it out of the park with their preparations for the start of training camp in August.

Up today: USF.

Who needs to step it up: The receivers.

It is no secret the Bulls have an incredible amount of talent at receiver. But the unit has been plagued by injuries in recent years and fallen short of expectations. This has got to be the year for the group to step it up, particularly with a senior quarterback in B.J. Daniels ready to go into his fourth year as a starter.

Sterling Griffin tops the list. Griffin was on pace for a breakout season last year before he hurt his ankle, and he still led the team with 530 yards and three touchdown receptions. With Griffin out, true freshman Andre Davis stepped in and showed some flashes of greatness. He is currently ahead of Griffin on the post-spring depth chart. Another true freshman from a year ago, Ruben Gonzalez, also is featured with the starters on the most recent depth chart.

Then you have Florida transfer Chris Dunkley, who could be productive as well. He still has some work to do and needs to have a really good summer to insert himself into a more prominent role. Then there are also Victor Marc and Terrence Mitchell, both of whom have plenty of speed and the ability for some breakout plays.

The biggest key is for all of these receivers to work with Daniels on their rhythm and chemistry, to build trust in one another so there is no hesitation and everybody is on the same page when the season begins. The talent is there -- can USF put it all together?
