Rutgers and Kansas have agreed to a two-game series beginning in 2015, the schools announced Thursday.
The Scarlet Knights host the Jayhawks at High Point Solutions Stadium on Sept. 26, 2015. Rutgers will make the return trip to Memorial Stadium in Lawrence on Sept. 15, 2018. The two schools have never played in football.
Athletic director Tim Pernetti has vowed to beef up Rutgers' nonconference schedule. While Kansas has struggled over the past several years, the Jayhawks do play in the Big 12 and should improve strength of schedule.
“We are excited about our new series with the Kansas Jayhawks in 2015 and 2018 and bringing our fans another great nonconference opponent at High Point Solutions Stadium,” Pernetti said in a statement. “We remain hard at work every day on football scheduling to do whatever it takes to deliver an exciting slate of future games for all of our great Rutgers football fans."
With the addition of a home-and-home series with the Jayhawks, Rutgers now has home-and-home games scheduled against opponents from major conferences in five of the next six seasons. The home games include Arkansas (2013), Penn State (2014), Kansas, (2015), UCLA (2016) and Miami (2018).
The 2015 schedule features two nonconference BCS opponents in consecutive weeks. The Scarlet Knights visit Penn State on Sept. 19 and host the Jayhawks the following week. The same goes for 2018, when Rutgers faces Kansas and Miami in consecutive weeks.
