I got tied up with hoops duties last night, so my apologies for posting this a bit late, but Minnesota linebacker recruit Sam Maresh has a tumor in his left calf.
This is the latest setback for Maresh, a heralded prep linebacker who underwent heart surgery June 26 to repair his aortic valve. He made an amazingly quick recovery from the surgery and was scheduled to participate in spring practice until doctors discovered the tumor following recent tests.
The good news, according to a message posted by Maresh's father on the family's CaringBridge.org Web site, is that it's highly unlikely the tumor will be cancerous. Maresh will need to have the tumor removed, but his prognosis as far as football goes won't be known until further testing is done. Coach Tim Brewster expects to know more in the next few days.
It's obviously another tough challenge for a young man, but knowing Maresh, he'll find a way to get back on the field as soon as possible.
