Michigan announced Thursday it will face UMass and Bowling Green during the 2010 season.
Not surprisingly, both the Minutemen and Falcons will visit Michigan Stadium as part of one-year contracts.
Michigan will host UMass on Sept. 18 followed by Bowling Green on Sept. 25. The Wolverines also will travel to rival Notre Dame on Sept. 11. Michigan is still looking for an opponent for Sept. 4, which will be the opener for the renovated Michigan Stadium.
Athletic director Bill Martin expects to announce the opponent in the near future.
The UMass game had been discussed for some time, and Bowling Green fits the scheduling agreement between the Big Ten and the Mid-American Conference. I'd expect (and hope) Michigan tries to make a bigger splash with its Sept. 4 opponent, considering the occasion.
Michigan has never played UMass and played Bowling Green just once, winning 42-7 in 2000.
There was some sad news out of Michigan today, as former Wolverines and Detroit Lions star Terry Barr died after battling Alzheimer's disease. Barr played halfback and defensive back at Michigan and was named team MVP in 1955. He also won the Big Ten's medal of honor in 1957.
