Listening for the Bob Knight echoes

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- I'm sitting in the Assembly Hall media room, where former Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight staged some memorable news conferences. I can still hear the four-letter words bouncing off the walls.

Anyway, I've arrived safely at Indiana, and I'll be starting my interviews with players at about 1:15 p.m. ET, so check back throughout the day for updates on quarterback Kellen Lewis, linebacker Matt Mayberry, safety Jerimy Finch and other Hoosier notables.

You'll be glad to know the new FieldTurf at Memorial Stadium looks impeccable after floods damaged the pitch this summer. The construction of the north end-zone facility also is coming along, and the new stands and a 24,000-square-foot weight room will be ready for the 2009 season. I also took a walk across the Assembly Hall court, just in time to see Hoosiers 7-foot center Tijan Jobe rock the rim during an individual workout.

A couple of league notes to pass along.

  • Wisconsin will reveal its depth chart for the season opener around 4 p.m. CT. Fifth-year senior Allan Evridge is expected to be named the starting quarterback, and the Badgers also will reveal their team captains at that time. It will be interesting to see who occupies the starting spots at cornerback and place-kicker.

  • Purdue coach Joe Tiller is considering altering his policy of not letting injured players travel with the team so that Jaycen Taylor, who will miss the season with a torn ACL, can attend road games. Taylor's positive influence and leadership skills are the reasons for the potential change.

  • Illinois broke camp after its morning practice and will head back to Champaign for the remainder of the preseason.
