Wildcats' Persa available in emergency

Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa is available for emergency use today against Army.

Sophomore Kain Colter will get the start, but Persa has been cleared to participate if Northwestern needs him. The first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2010 has missed Northwestern's first two games as he continues to rehab from a ruptured Achilles' tendon.

Persa said this week that he was getting closer to a return, but still hadn't received medical clearance. He now has been cleared.

Northwestern has been cautious with Persa to this point, but it could benefit the senior to get a bit of work against Army before Big Ten play opens Oct. 1 at Illinois.

The interesting thing will be what Northwestern does if Colter struggles against Army. Would it only take an injury to Colter for Pat Fitzgerald to send in Persa? We'll find out this afternoon.
