Iowa on the ropes at home

Last week, Iowa just couldn't get a stop when it needed one against Iowa State.

Today, the Hawkeyes can't score.

They trail Pitt 24-3 at home late in the third quarter and are in serious danger of falling to 1-2 on the year. The offense has been totally out of sync, and James Vandenberg (14-of-27, 182 yards and an interception) has had trouble connecting with his wideouts. Add in a scuffling running game and eight costly penalties so far (plus two missed field goals) and Iowa is doing just about everything wrong.

Remember this is a Pitt team that had trouble putting away Maine last week. The Panthers' offense hadn't done a whole lot outside of a long pass play against a broken coverage in the first half and a touchdown on a double-reverse pass in the third quarter. But the Iowa offense gave them more great field position moments ago with a three-and-out and a penalty on the punt.

Iowa is no stranger to fourth-quarter magic, but this team looks completely out of whack right now. The boos are coming down at Kinnick Stadium, and you can understand the frustration by everyone around this program right now.
