Penn State to honor Mauti on helmets

Penn State will honor its 2012 team by giving it a permanent place on the facade above the East stands at Beaver Stadium.

But that's not all.

The Lions will recognize star senior linebacker Michael Mauti by wearing a "42" on their helmets. Mauti, a top candidate for Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors, suffered a knee injury last week against Indiana and will miss today's game against Wisconsin.

Every Penn State player will have "42" prominently displayed on his helmet.

It's a nice gesture for a great player and an emotional leader, but it feels a little odd, too. Mauti isn't dead. He's very much alive and will be playing in the NFL next year.

It's the first time since the 1974 season that the Lions will wear numbers on their helmets.

Again, love the Mauti recognition, not crazy about the tribute itself.
