Michigan State will kick off its season on a Friday night for the third consecutive year.
The team on Tuesday announced it has moved its season opener against Western Michigan to Friday, Aug. 30. The Spartans opened the 2012 season against Boise State under the lights, and began 2011 against Youngstown State, winning both contests.
The Western Michigan game originally had been set for Saturday, Aug. 31. Michigan State and Western Michigan have met 12 times, all in East Lansing, and the Spartans hold a 10-2 edge in the series. MSU has an eight-game win streak against the Broncos.
The Spartans are 8-5 in home night games and 95-21 in season openers.
Big Ten teams have become more open to starting seasons on weekdays. Minnesota and Indiana both have moved their 2013 openers to Thursday, Aug. 29.
