U-M without either starting safety for opener

No. 17 Michigan will be without either starting safety for the Wolverines' season opener against Central Michigan on Saturday.

Senior strong safety Thomas Gordon is suffering a one-game suspension, the school confirmed Saturday morning, while free safety Courtney Avery underwent arthroscopic knee surgery last weekend. Earlier last week Michigan coach Brady Hoke had said redshirt junior Josh Furman or sophomore Jarrod Wilson could fill in for Avery.

But after that, the Wolverines will likely turn to youth in its secondary, possibly using a combination of true freshmen Jourdan Lewis, Dymonte Thomas and Delano Hill.
