After two weeks of our Big Ten fantasy league, The One Who Knocks and The Trombone Shorties are all tied up.
Adam's Shorties got revenge for my Week 1 win with a decisive 177-142 decision in Week 2. Michigan's Jeremy Gallon put up 37 points for him with that huge Notre Dame showing, while smart waiver-wire pickup Nate Sudfeld delivered 33 points. I had the week's top scoring player in Michigan's Devin Gardner at 41 points, and Michigan State's defense (25) continued to bring the goods.
Alas, Braxton Miller's early injury against San Diego State doomed the Knockers, as he amassed only one point before heading to the sideline. That makes my decision this week extremely difficult, as Miller's status for the Cal game is up in the air. If he plays, he'll probably put up some big numbers against a shaky Cal defense. If he doesn't play, I'll likely lose for a second consecutive week. But if I drop him, I risk Adam picking him up on the waiver wire. What to do?
Here are our free-agent pickups for Week 3:
Brian adds Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah and drops Wisconsin RB James White
Rationale: I made the reverse move last week, and it cost me five points. I think Abdullah has a better chance of putting up points this week in an expected shootout with UCLA than White does at Arizona State.
Adam adds Minnesota's defense and drops Wisconsin's defense
Rationale: This is all about matchups, and Wisconsin faces a brutal one with Taylor Kelly and Arizona State. Minnesota, meanwhile, gets to feast on a cupcake (Western Illinois) and is likely continue its playmaking ways.
Brian adds Illinois QB Nathan Scheelhaase and drops Ohio State QB Braxton Miller
Rationale: The preceding sentence is one I never thought I'd write. But I'm not at all confident in Miller's health this week, while Scheelhaase has put up big numbers in Bill Cubit's offense. He'll likely have a tougher time of things vs. Washington, but at least I know he'll play and pass it a lot. And if I lose, I'll pick up Miller next week.
Adam adds Minnesota QB Philip Nelson and drops Indiana QB Nate Sudfeld
Rationale: Another matchup move here, as while I like Sudfeld, he faces a tougher defensive test in Bowling Green. Nelson has been effective with his feet and should open up the passing game more against Western Illinois.
