Large turnout for Penn State's pro day

Penn State's annual pro day seemed to fly under the radar, and there weren't many mentions in the media leading up to the event.

But pro day took place Wednesday in State College, and representatives from all 32 NFL teams were on hand. Fightonstate.com has a detailed recap of the event (subscription required).

A couple of items to note:

  • Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox attended Penn State's pro day, and, according to Fightonstate.com, left after the defensive linemen worked out. With defensive end Julius Peppers possibly on his way out of Carolina, the team might look to add a player like Aaron Maybin in the draft.

  • Several Penn State players improved their numbers from the NFL combine, including defensive end Maurice Evans, wide receiver Derrick Williams and cornerback Lydell Sargeant.

  • Lions senior linebacker Sean Lee told the Web site he's not sure if he'll play inside or outside linebacker when the team opens spring practice later this month. There's some debate about whether Penn State will use a 3-4 alignment more this season after losing several defensive ends but returning plenty at linebacker.

The Patriot-News' Bob Flounders reports that Maybin has added 25 pounds since mid-January, which is no surprise. Anyone who watched Maybin last year knew he would need to gain weight to play defensive end at the next level.

Flounders also lists 40 times for several Penn State players. Maybin significantly improved his 40 time from the combine.
