Volchenkov suspended 4 games for Marchand hit

The NHL didn't waste any time on this one. The Department of Player Safety announced that Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov has been suspended four games for elbowing Bruins winger Brad Marchand in the head during the second period of Bruins' 5-4 win at New Jersey on Wednesday. Marchand had to be helped off the ice and did not return. There was no further word on his condition Thursday morning.

The reason for the swift action from the league most likely was due to Volchenkov being a repeat offender. He was suspended three games for another illegal hit to the head in 2011. The Russian defenseman has one goal and three assists with 22 penalty minutes in 32 games this season.
