It was done right

BOSTON –- It was handled the right way.

As soon as the Penguins’ Matt Cooke stepped onto the ice for his first shift, Bruins pugilist Shawn Thornton followed. Cooke knew what was coming and quickly went toe-to-toe with Thornton, who connected on a few punches. After the two fell to the ice and the linesmen jumped in, Thornton kept throwing punches and then had words with Cooke.

Both were given five minutes for fighting at 1:58 of the first period, but Thornton also was given a 10-minute misconduct.

When Cooke’s five minutes were up, he returned to the bench, where his teammates stood and banged their sticks against the boards.

Thornton received a standing ovation from his teammates, and the fans, when his penalty expired.
