UMass lands No. 6 seed; Harvard No. 12

For the first time since 1998, the University of Massachusetts saw its name in one of the slots on the NCAA men's tournament bracket.

UMass (24-8) is the No. 6 seed in the Midwest region and will play Friday at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET in a first-round game at Raleigh, N.C. UMass will play either Iowa (20-12) or Tennessee (21-12), who will meet in a "First Four" game Wednesday night at Dayton, Ohio.

The Minutemen, who opened the season 16-1 in nonconference games and climbed as high as No. 13 in the AP poll, were inconsistent in Atlantic 10 play, finishing the regular season 10-6. They beat Rhode Island in the A-10 tournament before losing to George Washington in the quarterfinals.

Harvard, which is in the NCAA tournament for the third straight year, is the No. 12 seed in the East region and will play Cincinnati (27-6) Thursday at 2 p.m. ET in a first-round game at Spokane, Wash.

The Crimson (26-4) won the Ivy League's automatic berth by finishing atop the league with a 13-1 record.
