In just his second season as the men's basketball coach at Boston University, Patrick Chambers helped bring about a remarkable turnaround that took the Terriers from middle of the pack to America East champions and to the NCAA tournament.
As a result, Chambers signed an extension on Thursday that keeps him at BU through the 2015-16 season, assistant vice president and director of athletics Mike Lynch announced.
"It was a great surprise to be honest with you," Chambers said by phone Friday. "It came out of left field. I really appreciate it."
The former Villanova assistant had two years plus an option remaining on his original deal with BU, which would have taken him through the 2013-14 season. Chambers said the two added years give him peace of mind, knowing he won't have to move his wife and two young children anytime soon.
"This business can be a little bit crazy with the coaching carousel, with the hirings and firings," he said. "By giving me this extension they're saying they're committed to me and my staff."
