A few notes and observations about this week's poll:
EL back in the elite: Off to one of its best starts in school history (13-0), East Longmeadow moves into the Top 5 of this week's poll, at No. 5, for the first time since the 2011 season. The Spartans endured a rough stretch of games this last week and half -- with Minnechaug, Agawam and Westfield all on tap -- and mowed down each opponent in succession. A number of bats have lead the way, including Anthony Geary (12 RBI) and John Bortolussi (11 RBI), but keep an eye on pitcher Jake Smith, who is 5-0 with 46 strikeouts in 32.1 innings so far.
Notable debuts and returns: Danvers makes its long-awaited season debut, at No. 15, following its marathon 12-inning 3-2 loss to No. 3 Peabody last week. It was the Falcons' first loss of the season. Also making debuts this week are Wachusett (20), Nashoba (22) and Agawam (25).
Meanwhile, Chelmsford comes in at No. 20, returning after a one-week hiatus following a 14-6 win over archrival No. 9 Billerica last week, one of the more surprising victories of the season's first half. Lincoln-Sudbury (23) and Taunton (24) also make returns.
