St. John's (S) hockey's Murphy retires

Brian Murphy is retiring as head coach of the St. John’s of Shrewsbury hockey team. A veteran of 30 seasons behind the Pioneers’ bench, Murphy leaves the program one win shy of career victory No. 400.

St. John’s athletic director Pat White told ESPN Boston of Murphy’s decision to retire on Thursday.

“He leaves behind a terrific tradition of hockey at the school,” White said. “He got kids to play at the Division 1 college level. And he’s a great educator.”

Murphy has long served as an English instructor at the school.

The Pioneers missed the MIAA tournament last season with a record of 7-11-4, one season after qualifying for the Super 8 tournament.

White also told ESPN Boston that a search for Murphy’s successor has started immediately and will accept applications for the position.

Although White admitted it would be tough shoes to fill.

“He’s done so much for hockey in Central Mass.,” he said, “and he always put the school first.”
