Bracketology: West Playoff Picture, Week 7

ESPNBoston.com presents the latest in our weekly Bracketology series, where we map out what the MIAA playoff picture would look like if playoffs started tomorrow. A reminder before reading: the Bracketology segment DOES NOT include teams who are currently in the playoff chase, as the top FOUR teams in Western Mass. will qualify for the playoffs.

For a reminder about point-system calculations, here is how the totals are added up for teams in Western Mass:

  • 16 Points for defeating a team more than two divisions higher (excluding mandated games)

  • 14 Points for defeating a team two divisions higher (excluding mandated games)

  • 12 Points for defeating a team one division higher (excluding mandated games)

  • 10 Points for defeating a team within your division, for defeating a team within your league (including mandatory crossovers), for defeating a team outside of Massachusetts

  • 8 Points for defeating a team in one division lower (excluding mandated games)

  • 6 Points for defeating a team in two divisions lower (excluding mandated games)

  • 4 Points for defeating a team in more than two divisions lower (excluding mandated games)

  • 2 Points for each of your opponent’s wins (a team you have defeated)

After adding up your team’s point total, divide the total number by the number of games your team has played.

Division 2

1. Westfield (5-0), 12.4 points

2. Central (4-1), 11.6 points

3. East Longmeadow (4-1), 8 points

4. West Springfield (3-2), 7.2 points

Analysis: Central continues to gradually make progress on top-seeded Westfield, more than cutting the lead in half last week after the Eagles handily knocked off Minnechaug on the road. The Bombers are the only undefeated team left in the D2 West region. The showdown between Westfield and Central is November 1st at Central, mark your calendars.

Division 4

1. Wahconah (6-0), 15.33 points

2. Agawam (5-0), 14.4 points

T-3. Chicopee (2-3), 4.8 points

T-3. Northampton (2-3), 4.8 points

T-3. South Hadley (2-3), 4.8 points

Analysis: Agawam and Wahconah continue to roll in the D4 West region, with Wahconah taking on a struggling Taconic team on Saturday. Agawam will be on the road on Friday night, is this finally this week the Brownies are pulled from the undefeated ranks? We’re looking at you South Hadley.

Division 5

1. Hoosac Valley (5-1), 12 points

2. Mount Greylock (5-1), 11.67 points

3. Easthampton (4-1), 10 points

4. Cathedral (3-2), 7.6 points

Analysis: Mount Greylock has gone relatively unchallenged the last three weeks, beating Pittsfield, Drury, and St. Joseph by a combined score of 96-6. The Mounties trail Hoosac Valley by a slight margin though, the Mounties crushed Taconic last week and will look to do the same against Pittsfield this week.

Division 6

1. McCann Tech (5-0), 14.4 points

2. Turners Falls (5-0), 12.8 points

3. Mohawk Trail (5-1), 11 points

4. Greenfield (4-1), 10.4 points

Analysis: McCann Tech’s defense has given up 14 points in five games this year, and no, that isn’t a misprint. The Hornets have been annihilating opponents out west, is 4-2 Franklin Tech up for the challenge on Saturday? Turners Falls will certainly be hoping so, with a McCann Tech loss and a win over a good Division 5 squad in Easthampton, Turners Falls would then in all likelihood take over the top seed.
