Benzan becomes Roxbury Latin's all-time leading scorer

Last night in a loss to Middlesex School, Roxbury Latin point guard Patrick Benzan became the school's all-time leading scorer, breaking the mark of 1,549 points set in 2007 by Remy Cofield.

Benzan -- who is set to suit up for Holy Cross in 2015-16, after a post-graduate season at Worcester Academy next year -- poured in 36 points to go along with eight assists and eight rebounds, putting him currently at 1,564 points. He also holds the school's all-time assists record, with 400.

"Patrick Benzan has worked diligently and arduously to develop and refine his craft during the six years that he has been a student at the Roxbury Latin School," Latin basketball coach and athletic director Tony Teixeira said. "Patrick is emblematic of reaching such a distinguished basketball milestone because he represents all that is good about scholastic and athletic achievement. Patrick is an honors students at what is arguably one of the best academic institutions in the country, and he is a remarkable spokesman and representative of our school.

"In this day and age of specialization, Patrick understands the importance of remaining balanced and well-rounded. To this end, he is not only the basketball captain, but he was also a 4-year member of the Varsity Soccer team (having served as team captain this year) and helped lead the team to a New England Championship during his junior year. I know that we are celebrating and recognizing his basketball career, but I offer this context to highlight just how remarkable Patrick’s basketball achievements are, given everything else that he does at such a demanding school.

"Patrick is the consummate point guard who understands the game beyond his years and whose value is at times immeasurable. He is clearly our school’s most decorated basketball player."

The five-year varsity player is a four-time All-ISL selection for the West Roxbury-based school, and is a three-time All-NEPSAC Class B. Last season, he led the Foxes to their most single-season wins in school history, with 18.
