Former Clinton High head football coach Archie Cataldi, one of the state's all-time winningest coaches, passed away last night at the age of 83.
Cataldi, a 1946 graduate of Clinton, coached the Gaels to 212 wins from 1975 until his retirement following their 36-20 win over Maynard on Thanksgiving in 2006. In 37 years as a head coach split between Clinton and Springfield Classical, Cataldi amassed a 246-135-2 record.
Under Cataldi, the Gaels appeared in seven Super Bowls, winning five of them. They also set the Central Mass. record for consecutive victories at 25, set in 2002 and since broken by Auburn this past fall.
Cataldi was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997.
