Super 8 analysis and Tuesday's hockey scores

No. 8 Central Catholic 2, No. 4 Weymouth 1 (Final)

First period notes: Kyle Williams versus Brian Brady the goaltending matchup, as expected. Tyler Piacentini puts the Wildcats on the board in the third minute of the game. Seeming as contractually obligated on each of Piacentini's goal, Riley Flanagan assisted on the play. The tightly checked period picked up with two minutes remaining when Shawn Jennette was called for a tripping penalty on Nick Leonard's breakaway attempt with 2:23 remaining, which led to a penalty shot call. On the penalty shot attempt, Leonard gained speed through the attacking zone and shifted hands a couple of times before finishing on the forehand to tie the game 1-1.

Second period notes: The Raiders took advantage of an early power play with Tommy Evangelista netting a goal three minutes in. Leonard continued his hot play with an assist. Ryan Daigle also added a helper on the play. The Wildcats go on the power play with 8:26 remaining. Weymouth's Steve Bristol was down on the ice for a while after a hit into the boards with a laceration to his head. Bristol skated off under his own power and the Wildcats went on the power play after a boarding call. However, they went scoreless with a quiet man advantage.

Third period notes: After a couple of hard luck non-calls, the Wildcats have to kill a Central power play with 10 minutes left. Brady was also shaken up on the play with a Raiders forward crashing into him after getting hauled down. Despite winning the ensuing faceoff, Central's man advantage was wiped out on a hooking call down the other end, negating Piacentini's rush down the other end. So it's now 4-on-4. Timeout Weymouth with 1:38 to play. Wildcats pulled the goalie, but the Raiders hung on with some key saves by Williams (who seemed to be shaken up by one of the shots), yeoman's work by Daigle (who made several key clears during the final minute) and Leonard (who blocked a shot from the point off a Weymouth faceoff win with two seconds to play).

No. 1 Malden Catholic 8, No. 6 Hingham 1 (Final)

First period notes: The teams started in a hurry, scoring two goals on their first three shots. However, the score remained 1-1 with some clutch goaltending by Hingham's Derek McInnis. James Gordon got the Harbormen out to a 1-0 lead with tally less then three minutes in. However, the Lancers volleyed back with Garrett White's snipe, slipping a wrister through McInnis's arm less than a minute later. MC outshot Hingham, 10-6, in the period.

Second period notes: McInnis kept up his strong play, stoning Brendan Collier with a toe save off of a 2-on-1 Lancer break with Mike Vecchione setting up the one-timer four minutes in. White provided MC with a 2-1 lead with his second of the night with 10:43 remaining in the period. It came in much the same form as his first of the game off of a faceoff win. Fitzgerald provided the Lancers with a two-goal lead about a minute later, tapping home a one-timer into an empty net after a perfect set up from Vecchione with 9:40 remaining. Then, with 8:22 remaining, Mike Iovanna put MC ahead, 4-1, with assists from White and Paul Wrenn. White later completed the hat trick with 3:53 remaining on Wrenn's second assist of the game. Roberto also added his second helper of the game. Iovanna closed out MC's feeding frenzy with his second of the game, scored with 35.4 seconds remaining.

Third period notes: Collier continued the Lancer assault, putting home a loose puck in the slot for a 7-1 lead on a 5-on-3 MC power play. White added his fourth of the game with 3:43 to play, the Lancers' second power play goal of the evening, with assists from Iovanna and Brendan White.
