Tyler Beede's draft status is still unclear, particularly so after today's latest development.
ESPN's Keith Law tweeted earlier this evening of the prized Vanderbilt-bound Lawrence Academy righthander, who is projected as a late first-rounder, "Tyler Beede sends letter to area scouts saying he is going to Vanderbilt, asks teams not to contact him."
A major league source confirmed this with me within the last hour, adding that the letter has been sent out to every New England area scout.
In the past, such letters have been used to get a player to drop to a team offering more money, or a particular development system they favor. But obviously in this case, the intent is unclear.
Reached earlier this evening by phone, Beede's father Walter declined comment, and would neither confirm nor deny that the letter was sent.
