The New York Mets have selected former Beverly High standout and UMass-Lowell lefthander Jack Leathersich in the fifth round (162nd overall).
As a three-year starter for coach Dave Wilbur, Leathersich graduated Beverly High in 2008 as the school's all-time leader in strikeouts and wins.
This past season for the River Hawks, he went 6-2 with a 1.62 ERA, leading the team in strikeouts (126, in 89 innings). Oppoents hit just .175 against him. In three seasons at UMass-Lowell, he has a record of 16-8.
