ORLANDO -- A quick scene-setter here from the NFL's annual meeting:
Patriots coach Bill Belichick showed up at the Ritz-Carlton today in a Florida Gators visor and sweatshirt, and was spotted in the lobby upon his arrival chatting with Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz.
Belichick hired Schwartz in 1993 with the Cleveland Browns, and the two remain close today. Schwartz fondly recalled the connection in an interview in February of 2009, saying it was the first step in earning a "PhD in Footballology."
"I wasn't making any money, and it wasn't a great job from a duty standpoint, but what it allowed me to do was have all access to the coaching staff, to the scouting staff, to the team - and to learn from really good people in the NFL," Schwartz said in a piece that ran in the Boston Globe.
The Patriots will be well covered here over the next three days, as eight media members are on site -- from the Boston Globe (3), Boston Herald (2), Providence Journal (1), ESPNBoston (1) and Comcast Sports Net (1).
It will be interesting to see if any other team has as many media members here to cover the meetings.
