That's a wrap: Sunday key storylines

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- At the end of every day of training camp, ESPNBoston.com will post one blog entry highlighting the key news of the day:

Torry Holt placed on injured reserve. The veteran wide receiver has a knee injury that will require surgery this week, his agent Kennard McGuire said. Holt was not a lock for a roster spot, but coaches talked of how his veteran presence was a benefit to the team. This could mean the end of Holt's distinguished career.

Derrick Burgess practices for the first time. After not reporting to training camp for what he called "personal" reasons related to his family, the veteran outside linebacker/rush linebacker was on the field for the first time. He said he is fully committed to the Patriots. He arrives at a time when the team's depth at the position is thinned.

Tom Brady's taped fingers. Bill Belichick smiled when asked about the quarterback having his right index and right middle finger taped together. Asked if there was reason for concern, Belichick said it wasn't "life-threatening." Brady had the fingers taped in the morning walkthrough practice, but went through the afternoon practice un-taped. The fingers don't seem to be affecting his performance.

Tully Banta-Cain doesn't finish practice. The Patriots' leading sacker in 2009 was having his right ankle/foot looked at by members of the team's training staff toward the end of practice. Banta-Cain walked off the field under his own power, but his status will be something to monitor. Rookie Jermaine Cunningham, who plays the same position, also remains out of action after sustaining an undisclosed injury in Wednesday's practice.

Ron Brace returns to practice. Thin at defensive end, the Patriots received a boost with the return of 2009 second-round draft choice Ron Brace, who had opened camp on the non-football injury list. Brace worked at the left end spot where the Patriots are adjusting following Ty Warren being placed on season-ending injured reserve. Gerard Warren tops the depth chart at left end, but Brace could be a top backup.

Roster moves. The Patriots re-signed receiver Buddy Farnham and signed rookie offensive lineman Brian Simmons. Safety Ross Ventrone, who was injured in Thursday's preseason opener, was waived.
