Three up, three down for Pats

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- A look at three players/units whose performance was up, and three players/units whose performance was down in the team's 36-35 loss to the Rams in preseason action:

Ron Brace -- Before hobbling off the field in the second half and not returning, the 2009 second-round draft choice had seven tackles and one sack, as he has been building momentum at defensive end.

Rob Gronkowski -- Rookie tight end finishes with three catches for 66 yards and two impressive touchdowns (14 yards, 20 yards) that show strength, determination and athleticism.

Brandon Tate/Randy Moss -- Second-year receiver opened the game with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and added two catches for 17 yards, while Moss continues to show he can threaten defenses with his 65-yard touchdown reception.

Tully Banta-Cain -- Penalized for encroachment and roughing the passer in a game in which the Patriots couldn't get enough heat on Rams quarterbacks.

Laurence Maroney -- For the second straight game, he doesn't play a single snap, with the coaching staff calling on Sammy Morris and BenJarvus Green-Ellis instead of him. He's played just 12 snaps all preseason.

Devin McCourty/Darius Butler/Patrick Chung/Leigh Bodden -- All four players either picked up penalties or had breakdowns in coverage on a night when the secondary struggled against two rookie quarterbacks.
