During his weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI on Monday morning, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady discussed how coach Bill Belichick cracked the whip on the team during meetings on Friday and Sunday.
"He gave it to us pretty good," Brady told co-hosts John Dennis and Gerry Callahan. "There's always a running joke with our team [with] the humble pie. He was serving it on Friday. It was just what we needed. We didn't go out and play very well."
Brady could sense that it was coming during the game when Belichick called for a punt on fourth-and-inches from midfield midway through the first quarter.
"I think he wanted to do it just to yell at us," Brady said.
Brady complimented the impact of rookie tight end Rob Gronkowski, the 42nd overall selection in this year's draft who had two impressive touchdowns last Thursday against the Rams.
"He has had, obviously, a very good training camp and in three preseason games you've seen him do some unique things," Brady said. "I think that's why we drafted him where we drafted him, because he has the type of speed and size (6-6, 265) and awareness that you're looking for in that position."
Brady, who later added that veteran tight end Alge Crumpler has been a great addition to the team, also touched on the history of the Patriots' offense from his time with the team, pointing out how it has changed from 2001 as a two-back attack with running back Antowain Smith/fullback Marc Edwards, to a single-back attack in 2004 behind Corey Dillon, to more of a three-receiver approach in 2007. He said his recall allows him to tap into different parts of the offense at various times over the course of the season.
On a personal note, Brady, who attended UFC 118 with teammate Stephen Neal on Saturday, was asked what he does in his personal time to get away from football.
"I don't go out very often," he said. "There are a few shows I watch. I like 'Entourage.' I like 'Dexter.' I loved 'The Shield' -- that was probably my favorite. I love "The Wire." So I just kind of DVR those and when I get some time, I'll sit down with my wife and watch those. My life is very different now than it used to be."
