The Patriots will be releasing veteran outside linebacker/rush defensive end Derrick Burgess today, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports.
Burgess was a projected starter for the team, so this is a surprise move, especially given how the team welcomed him back after he did not initially report for camp. He did struggle against the run in the preseason finale.
The Patriots have Tully Banta-Cain as a starter at one outside linebacker spot, and now the question is who will play opposite of him in the team's 3-4 alignment.
Marques Murrell started the team's two first preseason games, although some viewed him as a player on the roster bubble. Rob Ninkovich is another option, as is rookie Jermaine Cunningham, who has not played this preseason after sustaining an injury Aug. 11.
Veteran Pierre Woods has also been with the team throughout camp, but he was told by the team today that he would be released.
