ANALYSIS: The coaching staff utilized a rotation of 17 defenders throughout most of the game. … Mayo and McCourty were part of every package, with Mayo (12 tackles) showing flashes of his 2008 form and McCourty turning in as solid a rookie debut as could be desired. … The one play Banta-Cain didn’t play was the game’s first. He was a consistent presence as he has emerged as a leader and every-down player capable of providing a burst in the pass rush, but also the strength to stop the run. … The top three safeties – Chung, Sanders and Meriweather – rotated in the base 3-4 alignment. Chung and Sanders were the first combination, although all three played a lot because the Patriots spent most of the second half in sub packages with five or six defensive backs. Chung, based on playing time, looks like the No. 1 player at the position right now. … Cunningham played solely in sub packages as a pass rusher off the defensive left side. … Moss’s one play was the Hail Mary at the end of the second quarter.
