ANALYSIS: After the Patriots signed defensive end Eric Moore to a two-year contract on Dec. 3, few could have predicted that the former United Football League player would be on the field for all but six snaps in the game that the team clinched the AFC East title. Moore played two roles: pass-rushing defensive end in both nickel and dime packages, and 5-technique in the 3-4 alignment for the first time as a Patriot. He finished with five tackles and a fumble recovery, and generated some good pressure on quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. … The Patriots got away from their nickel defense on early downs, instead going to a 3-4. That helped settle things down against the run. ... Free-agent defensive lineman Landon Cohen, signed to a two-year deal last Wednesday, played as an interior sub rusher (11 first-half snaps; 23 in second half). ... Jerod Mayo played every snap until the final two series of the game. The coaching staff usually leaves Mayo in the game throughout, but the defensive captain had been hooked up to IVs leading up to the game because of the stomach flu. ... With rookie outside linebacker Jermaine Cunningham (calf) out with an injury, that thrust Tully Banta-Cain into a full-time role as he played both outside linebacker in the 3-4 alignment and edge rusher in nickel and dime packages. ... With James Sanders battling the flu, the Patriots had Brandon Meriweather and Patrick Chung as the primary safety tandem, with Jarrad Page coming on in the nickel as Chung moved into the slot.
