Quick-hits from Dowling, Vereen

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Some quick-hits from second round draft selections Ras-I Dowling and Shane Vereen, who both met with reporters at Gillette Stadium this afternoon.

Vereen meets Ivan Fears. Running back Shane Vereen, who arrived this morning from California, met with Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears briefly this morning. Because the NFL has reinstated the lockout, the two were only able to speak on a personal level, "getting to know each other," Vereen said.

In lockout, Vereen will reach out to teammates. With players again locked out of the Patriots' facility, Vereen says that he will be in touch with his new teammates in the coming days. "I will see what I can do, get a workout partner going," he said.

Size of Dowling apparent. In meeting with the media, it was clear that cornerback Ras-I Dowling will add size to the Patriots' secondary. He is listed at 6-foot-1 and appeared perhaps even taller in person.

Dowling polishes up public speaking. While at the University of Virginia, Dowling said he took a public speaking class. "It really helped me out, so I took another class after that," he said. Dowling said the experience has helped him in speaking with youth at various charity events.
