The Patriots worked out unrestricted free agent linebacker Ricky Brown on Friday, a source tells ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Brown has played the last five seasons for the Raiders; in 14 games last season, he tallied 13 tackles.
Signing with Oakland as an undrafted free agent in 2006, Brown is a product of Boston College. He was the 2005 winner of the Scanlon Award, the "highest honor bestowed upon a BC football player that recognizes accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and in the community."
The workout comes as the Patriots find themselves thin at the linebacker position, with Brandon Spikes, Josh Barrett, and Jeff Tarpinian already out of practice, Dane Fletcher leaving Thursday's preseason game in Tampa with a thumb injury, and rookie Christian Cox having been placed on injured reserve this week.
In addition, as previously reported by Aaron Wilson of Scout.com, the Patriots worked out wide receiver Mark Clayton on Friday, a source tells Reiss.
