Tight end Lee Smith, the team's fifth-round round draft choice from Marshall, has been told he will be waived by today's deadline, according to a league source.
The move, barring a late change, isn't a surprise considering the rise of rookie free agent Will Yeatman.
Smith had a strong start to camp, and was ahead of Yeatman on the depth chart for the first preseason game. But Yeatman made his move in the second preseason game when he had a chance to play with the starters and seized the chance.
The Patriots have Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez and Yeatman atop their tight end depth chart.
