Rookie free agent tight end Will Yeatman has been told he'll be waived, according to a league source.
The move is a bit of a surprise, as the team also told tight end Lee Smith -- their fifth-round pick -- that he would be waived as well. Yeatman had been playing ahead of Smith since the second week of the preseason.
If these moves become official, the Patriots would have Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez as their tight ends. For a team that runs a lot of multiple tight end packages, not having a third tight end on the roster would be a bit of a gamble.
If Yeatman clears waivers, he almost certainly would be signed to the practice squad.
