WR Vidal Hazelton at USC.FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- While the Patriots' punting situation bears watching, the team continues to explore free-agent options at other positions as part of the process of keeping emergency lists fresh and the practice squad competitive.
Along those lines, the team had rookie receiver Vidal Hazelton in for a workout. This is the Patriots' second close-up with Hazelton, the former Southern Cal and University of Cincinnati product, after working him out prior to the draft. At 6-foot-2, 208 pounds, Hazelton is a bigger target who has battled injuries. He spent the preseason with the Chargers before being released.
The Patriots also worked out long snapper Kyle Nelson, who was with the Saints in 2011 training camp after signing as a rookie free agent out of New Mexico State. Nelson was released by the Saints at the end of preseason before hooking on with the Chiefs practice squad for two weeks.
The Patriots are on their fourth long snapper over the last two seasons -- rookie Danny Aiken. Aiken was claimed on waivers from the Bills at this year's final roster cutdown.
The Patriots also worked out defensive back Josh Victorian and receivers Chris Brooks and Johnathan Haggerty.
