Patriots waive OT Thomas Welch

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots announced today that offensive lineman Thomas Welch has been waived.

Welch, a 2010 seventh-round draft choice out of Vanderbilt, has been utilized as a sixth blocker the last two weeks. He played 13 snaps Sunday against the Jets and on one of them, he set too wide and let outside linebacker Jamaal Westerman come inside free for a blindside sack of quarterback Tom Brady.

Welch played 24 snaps in the Patriots' win over Oakland, and was on the field for some of the team's more productive plays that day.

He is a candidate to return to the Patriots' practice squad should he clear waivers.

The Patriots did not announce a corresponding roster move, so they currently have 52 players on the 53-man roster.
