Chung's status & safety personnel

Safety Patrick Chung has missed practice the last two days with a foot injury, putting his availability for Sunday night's game against the Jets in question.

The injury occurred late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Giants, when Chung came down hard on the sideline and was seen grabbing his right ankle (screenshot here).

Chung is tied for the Patriots' team lead in tackles (credited with 58 by coaches) and also serves as the personal protector on the punt team. His absence would be significant, leading to the question, "If Chung doesn't play, what's left at safety for the Patriots?"

Here is the personnel breakdown:

James Ihedigbo -- The five-year veteran has started the team's last four games. A former New York Jet who played mostly on special teams and in sub packages with the Jets, he has taken an expanded role in New England. The four starts are the first of his career. He split time last week with Josh Barrett, but with Barrett landing on season-ending injured reserve, Ihedigbo looks primed to return to a full-time role.

Sergio Brown -- In September, coach Bill Belichick said Brown "has done nothing but improve in the year and a half that he’s been here." Since that compliment, however, Brown has had a rough go of it this season. The former undrafted free agent from Notre Dame has had two costly pass interference penalties (vs. Bills, Giants) and has seen his playing time drop off sharply over the last four games. His snap-count progression looks like this: 34, 62, 66, 36, 3, 0, 15, 1.

Sterling Moore -- The undrafted free agent from SMU was promoted from the practice squad this week and could factor into the safety mix in an emergency. He was primarily a cornerback in college, and his potential playing time is most likely to come in sub packages, which the Patriots have been in 61 percent of the time this season.

Ross Ventrone -- The former undrafted free agent from Villanova is currently on the practice squad. When the Patriots had a safety shortage leading into the Week 3 game at Buffalo, when Chung was out, Ventrone was promoted to the roster for depth purposes. He's been back and forth between the practice squad and roster this season, his primary contributions coming on special teams. The Patriots also have cornerback/safety Josh Victorian on the practice squad.

Phillip Adams/Antwaun Molden -- The reserve cornerbacks could factor into the mix in the event of an emergency.
