The Patriots have an open practice squad spot after promoting center Nick McDonald to the active roster on Saturday, and tight end Dorin Dickerson is the leading candidate. The expectation is that Dickerson, barring a late change, will be on board by Wednesday.
Dickeron, a 2010 seventh-round draft choice of the Houston Texans, was in for a workout on Friday (link here).
With the tight end position becoming such a big part of the Patriots' attack, it is smart business to layer the roster and practice squad in the event of injuries. The Patriots have Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez on the 53-man roster, with offensive lineman Nate Solder serving as a "big" tight end option when a greater blocking presence is needed.
Garrett Mills, an H-back type, is on the practice squad and Dickerson has a similar profile.
