Belichick hints at promotion

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick hinted that the Patriots will be promoting a player from their practice squad for Sunday's game against the Broncos. The team has an open roster spot after waiving cornerback Malcolm Williams on Thursday.

"I think we feel, for this game, that there will be another player besides him that would be able to contribute more than he would," Belichick explained, when asked about the Williams' decision. "We'll announce that prior to the game, most likely, unless we decide not to fill it. I would expect we would fill it with somebody we feel could help us in the game."

Williams, the team's seventh-round draft choice, was active for his first career NFL game Sunday in Washington. He did not play on defense, but was part of three special teams units -- kickoff coverage, punt return and kickoff return.

When it comes to practice squad promotions, few have cornered the market like Ross Ventrone. Perhaps he'd be the choice.
