The Patriots announced today that veteran defensive end Andre Carter was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a leg injury. That move was expected after Carter was carted off the field in Sunday's win over the Broncos.
The team also announced the signing of defensive end Cedric McKinley to the practice squad. McKinley had worked out for the team Dec. 14.
The 24-year old McKinley signed with the Vikings in 2010 as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota, but was released before training camp and spent the rest of the season out of football. He re-joined the Vikings for the 2011 preseason, and has spent parts of this season on the Vikings' practice squad.
At 6-foot-6, 282 pounds, McKinley would fit at defensive end in the Patriots' heavier 4-3 scheme.
The Patriots had an open spot on the practice squad after promoting safety Ross Ventrone on Saturday.
