Brady, Welker among Wednesday absences

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots practiced for the first time during their bye week on Wednesday, and quarterback Tom Brady and wide receiver Wes Welker were among five players not spotted at the workout.

Welker finished Sunday's game against Buffalo, while Brady also played in the game but missed one practice and was limited in two others last week with a left shoulder injury. The team does not have to release an injury report during their bye week, so the reason for both players' absences won't be disclosed by the team.

Offensive lineman Marcus Cannon was also not spotted on the Gillette Stadium game field, where the frigid Wednesday afternoon practice was held in light shoulder pads. Cannon played in Sunday's win over the Bills but did not suffer any noticeable injury.

Meanwhile, offensive linemen Logan Mankins (knee) and Sebastian Vollmer (back/foot) remained out of action. Neither played on Sunday.
