Pats eye Edelman's former roommate

In a move that could be with a "futures" signing in mind, the Patriots had former Kent State safety Brian Lainhart in for a workout Wednesday.

Lainhart, a former teammate/roommate of Julian Edelman with the Golden Flashes, had signed with the Bengals in July after he wasn't selected in the NFL Draft. He was released on Aug. 8 along with offensive lineman Mark Wetterer, who the Patriots had claimed on waivers.

Lainhart could be a candidate to sign a "futures" contract, which would mean he'd join the Patriots when the 2012 league year begins. Those type of signings are now happening across the NFL.

The Cincinnati Enquirer wrote on Lainhart when he signed with the Bengals (link here). Prior to that, Gil Brandt of NFL.com detailed Lainhart's Pro Day (link here).

In an interview with Yardbarker.com (link here) prior to the draft, Lainhart talked about how Edelman, now in his third season with the Patriots, has been one of the bigger influences on his career.

"I roomed with Edelman and I learned the process that he went though," Lainhart said in the interview. "Living with Julian and seeing the process and knowing what to expect was very worthwhile to me."
