Highlights from Belichick

INDIANAPOLIS -- A few of the highlights from coach Bill Belichick's news conference this morning:

1. Good week for Patriots. "After being off on Tuesday, I thought we had a real good effort from the players. They had a lot of energy. There are still a lot of things to work on. It is starting to come together, so we will polish a few situations up today. We are closing in on it. It’s been a good week, and I think the players are really focused and excited to play. It’s been a good week of preparation down here."

2. Drawing some laughs. Belichick drew laughs from reporters multiple times. The first came when a reporter asked if he felt the New England offense would need to score a lot of points because of the inconsistency of his defense. "Any other compliments you'd like to toss out there," Belichick said. The next time came when Belichick was asked about coming across more relaxed and engaging over the last five days. "That’s different than it normally is?" Belichick said, which sparked laughter.

3. Patricia the top defensive coach. Belichick was giving a glowing review of linebacker Jerod Mayo when he mentioned safeties coach Matt Patricia's role of calling the plays into the defensive huddle. It sounded as if Belichick was about to refer to Patricia as the team's defensive coordinator, before he paused, held the thought, and then picked up the discussion.
