The Patriots on Thursday signed free-agent linebacker Bobby Carpenter, a former first-round draft selection of the Cowboys in 2006.
Carpenter, an Ohio State product, played in 58 games for Dallas over four seasons, making three starts. He was traded to the Rams in May 2010, but did not make St. Louis' 53-man roster. He split the 2010 season between the Dolphins and Lions. Carpenter played in 16 games last season in Detroit (three starts), recording 29 tackles.
At 6-foot-2, 249 pounds, Carpenter has played both 3-4 inside linebacker and 4-3 outside linebacker. At this point in his career, the 28-year old faces an uphill battle for a roster spot with the Patriots.
