The Patriots on Friday hosted running backs Ryan Grant and Tim Hightower on free-agent visits, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports.
Grant, 29, was a thousand-yard rusher in 2008 and 2009 with the Green Bay Packers before missing most of the 2010 season with an ankle injury. In 14 starts last season, Grant rushed 134 times for 559 yards (4.2 yard average), with two touchdowns.
Hightower, 26, played three seasons in Arizona, rushing for a career-high 736 yards in 2010. Last season, Hightower played in five games for the Redskins, rushing 84 times for 321 yards.
With veteran running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis signing with the Bengals last month, and Kevin Faulk remaining unsigned on the free agent market, the Patriots are down to Danny Woodhead and 2011 draft selections Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen at running back.
In addition, the Patriots also hosted free-agent running back Joseph Addai, according to Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe.
