The Patriots have informed receiver Tiquan Underwood that he is being released, Underwood's agent confirmed today.
Underwood, best known for being released the night before Super Bowl XLVI, was considered a longshot to make the final roster this year. The unexpected availability of Jabar Gaffney, who said Wednesday that he is returning to the Patriots, might have led the Patriots to make the move with Underwood quicker than anticipated.
The 25-year-old Underwood played in six games for the Patriots last season, totaling three receptions for 30 yards.
The Patriots are stocked at receiver, with Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Gaffney, Deion Branch, Chad Ochocinco, Donte' Stallworth, Julian Edelman, Anthony Gonzalez, Matthew Slater, Britt Davis and seventh-round pick Jeremy Ebert on the depth chart.
News of Underwood's release was first reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
