In a piece now posted on CBSSports.com, Pat Kirwan writes on the importance of having solid offensive tackles. He includes a chart with the piece that rates the top five tackle groups in the NFL last season based on sacks allowed per pass play.
The Patriots ranked fifth, with starting left tackle Matt Light (3) and the combination of Sebastian Vollmer/Nate Solder/Marcus Cannon (7.5). They gave up a sack one of every 61 pass plays.
Light, it was noted by coach Bill Belichick last month, had just two mental errors all season. But now he's retired and the Patriots will likely be turning to Solder at the all-important left tackle spot.
Also notable is that the top tackle tandem from 2011 is the Titans' duo of Michael Roos and David Stewart (1 sack every 111 pass plays), which highlights a tough challenge for the Patriots' edge rushers in the season opener.
