Source: Pats work out six

The Patriots worked out six players on Monday, a league source confirms. The players were as follows: defensive back Chandler Fenner (Holy Cross), linebacker Jerry Franklin (Arkansas), defensive back Buddy Jackson (Pittsburgh), wide receiver Ricardo Lockette (Fort Valley State), linebacker Tyler Nielsen (Iowa), and linebacker J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati).

All of the players, with the exception of Lockette, were signed as rookie free agents after the 2012 NFL draft. Each of the players brought in has practice squad eligibility.

The Patriots have been active in bringing players in for workouts during the early part of the week thus far in the season, and today's workouts could be a case of the team doing it's due diligence on a number of players who it may consider as practice squad candidates, or emergency list players in the event of an injury on the active roster. Such was the case with tight end Kellen Winslow, who visited the Patriots earlier in September before signing with the team last Tuesday.

Tom E. Curran of Comcast Sports Net initially reported the workouts via Twitter.
